Leadership and Influence
Provide a respected voice for the profession to influence leaders and decision-makers on public policy and wider community issues
Key Indicators:
- Reputation for valued advice and engagement
- Incorporation of proposals into government policies and legislation
- Regulation of the profession in more Australian jurisdictions
- Progress with international mutual recognition agreements
What Strategies Will We Use?
- 3.1 Create the environment for strong contributions by engineering leaders to public policy debate and to industry decision-making, including long-term sustainability
- 3.2 Engage with the general media to inform the wider community of Engineers Australia's opinions on issues of importance to our way of life
- 3.3 Provide leadership and direction for the profession
- 3.4 Work toward an effective national regulatory framework as a safeguard for engineering outcomes
- 3.5 Engage with national and international counterparts to pursue matters of mutual interest, widen our reputation, and enhance the status of our members
Preferred Stakeholder Outcomes
3.1 Create the environment for strong contributions by engineering leaders to public policy debate and to industry decision-making, including long-term sustainability
We need actions to achieve:
- more engagement between office bearers and staff to strengthen our capability to respond with balanced professional advice to changing circumstances, emerging challenges, and significant public policy developments – incl such as climate change, population growth
- our office bearers and spokespersons being better prepared to take an independent leadership approach for the profession (at least as effectively as our counterpart organisations) in the arena of public policy debate
- the Federal Government seeking Engineers Australia's policy input on a wider range of national issues
- consideration by governments and other stakeholders of a broader range of infrastructure issues reported on by Engineers Australia
- continuing engagement between State/Territory authorities and Division leadership over issues affecting all disciplines of the engineering profession
- education policy-makers in all jurisdictions promoting a national curriculum with the required standards in science and maths, and their relevance to sustainability
- Federal and State education authorities seeking advice more often from Engineers Australia on curricula and related matters, including future demand for engineering skills
- more ways for local governments to support the activities and objectives of Engineers Australia (including collaboration with like-minded professional bodies)
- more office bearers, Fellows and other honoured members acting as public ambassadors for the profession
- more academic (engineering) staff with governance roles in industry
- more promotion of Engineers Australia and engagement with governments by staff
- more members promoting Engineers Australia with evidence of its successes as the leading voice for their profession
3.2 Engage with the general media to inform the wider community of Engineers Australia's opinions on issues of importance to our way of life
We need actions to achieve:
- increased positive references in both the general and specialist media to Engineers Australia's views and policies
- more positive responses from the Federal Government to unsolicited submissions from Engineers Australia on matters of national significance
- more personal involvement of engineering leaders in achieving Engineers Australia’ promotional goals for the profession, and more promotion by Engineers Australia of their contributions
3.3 Provide leadership and direction for the profession
We need actions to achieve:
- continued engagement by Engineers Australia’s leading office bearers and executives with our members and their groups - metropolitan, regional, remote, and overseas
- continued support for our office bearers and our higher governing bodies to help them fulfill their roles and obligations under our Royal Charter
- Engineers Media promoting the key messages of Engineers Australia in all their communication channels
- continued adaptation of contemporary management practices in support of our Council to ensure prudent decision-making and to sustain Engineers Australia as a financially viable organisation
3.4 Work toward an effective national regulatory framework as a safeguard for engineering outcomes
We need actions to achieve:
- better collaboration and a sense of urgency by governments to establish a nationally consistent regulatory regime for engineering practitioners, aligned with Engineers Australia’s system of recognition of competence (including perhaps even use of the occupational title ‘engineer’)
- better collaboration to encourage all government jurisdictions to keep both Engineers Australia and industry involved in regulatory developments
3.5 Engage with national and international counterparts to pursue matters of mutual interest, widen our reputation, and enhance the status of our members
We need actions to achieve:
- our learned society groups taking more opportunities to contribute across the full range of our international activities
- more offers by kindred professional bodies with a national presence to work collaboratively with us for the advancement of the profession
- a wider range of mutual recognition agreements offered to Engineers Australia by our counterpart international bodies
- maintenance of Engineers Australia’s respected level of contribution and engagement in international Accords, in the activities of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO) and other international engineering bodies, and in our own region
