Looking Back – Progress Against Our Last Plan

We have been working towards the eight Key Objectives of our last Strategic Plan for over four years. We have reported our performance ‘warts and all’ in each of our Annual Reports, including report card summaries distributed to all financial members.

1. Public role and professional standing

  • In 2005, we released our national Australian Infrastructure Report Card, and six State and Territory report cards. These have been very influential with governments, and in 2007 the new Federal Government established Infrastructure Australia, a long-standing recommendation of ours
  • We have used ‘theme’ years to highlight, review and promote significant issues for the profession
  • In 2009 we published a summary of ‘policy wins’ achieved by Engineers Australia for the profession in recent years
  • Our Excellence Awards at National and Division level have gone from strength to strength

2. An inclusive professional team

  • Membership has been growing at an increasing rate, and getting younger
  • We continued to nurture new interest areas for the benefit of members and the profession
  • From a low base, female membership has grown to over 10% of total membership
  • Technologist and Associate membership remains low

We've seen sustained growth in our total membership each year

  • under our current Strategic Plan, total membership is expected to grow from 79,000 at 30 June 2005 to well over 90,000 during 2009-10

3. Youth appeal

  • Members and staff in our Divisions are now engaging with many thousands of school students and teachers. Our schools outreach programs are now better coordinated and more effective
  • Engineers Australia contributed strongly to the ‘Carrick Review’ of engineering education; great strides have been made in improving management of our accreditation function

4. Chartered Status

  • We upgraded our CPD compliance policy for Chartered Status, and introduced a more flexible career breaks policy for members to recover Chartered Status following time away from engineering practice
  • We recently refreshed our approach to our Professional Development Program, which continues to remain ahead of target for the number of members participating

5. Continuing professional development

  • We support between 15 and 25 major national and international conferences each year
  • Colleges, National Committees and Technical Societies continued to produce national seminar programs, achieving very high interest for their eminent speaker tours across the Divisions
  • CELM events have become well-established in Division calendars, and continue to attract strong member interest
  • We now provide members with free access to Engineers Australia’s electronic library services
  • We received a major contract with the Federal Government to review and rewrite our flagship publication, Australian Rainfall and Runoff

6. International Reach and Influence

  • Engineers Australia continues to play a leadership role in the education accords of the International Engineering Alliance
  • We are keen to enter mutual recognition agreements for the benefit of members – more recently with Engineers Canada, the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Engineers Ireland
  • A crowning achievement was the installation of our Past President Barry Grear AO as President of WFEO in 2007
  • Through our Civil College, Engineers Australia was a signatory to the June 2007 Taipei Declaration on Sustainable Development
  • Applications for assessment from migrants with engineering qualifications have doubled since 2005

7. Internal (member) communications

  • A strategic marketing review of members’ needs was completed in 2007; on the basis of the results, the ‘Make It So’ community awareness campaign has now been started

8. A capable organisation

  • In support of our Strategic Plan 2005-2010, we undertook a complete overhaul of our top-level planning, budgeting and reporting cycle
  • Division regulations have been streamlined, and an online voting system for Division elections implemented
  • We have achieved good financial results each year

Our financial position got stronger and stronger

  • we have delivered an operating surplus each year
  • Divisions continued to generate good sponsorship income
