About Engineers Australia
The Institution of Engineers Australia (Engineers Australia) is a body corporate constituted by Royal Charter, which sets out its objects and purposes:
From our Supplemental Royal Charter and Bye-laws 2006 …
3. The principal objects and purposes of The Institution are to promote and advance the science and practice of engineering in all its branches and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas in relation thereto.
4. The other objects and purposes of The Institution are:
- To raise the character and status and advance the interests of the profession of engineering and those engaged therein.
- To maintain contact and communicate with the governments of the Commonwealth of Australia and of its States and Territories and with local and municipal governing bodies and other public and private organisations on matters of concern to engineers, and to the engineering profession and to the wider community.
- To increase the confidence of the community in the employment of engineers by admitting to The Institution only such persons as shall have satisfied the Council of The Institution that they have an adequate knowledge of both the theory and practice of engineering.
- To promote honourable practice and repress malpractice and to settle disputed points of practice and to decide all questions of professional usage and etiquette affecting members of The Institution.
Engineers Australia is a member-based not-for-profit professional association.
It is governed according to Bye-laws, which may be amended only by membership ballot.
The governing body is a nine-person Council, which is elected by a National Congress.
The national Congress comprises some 50 representatives of our nine geographic Divisions, eight engineering College Boards and other member-based interest groups.
The Division Committees deliver the strategic plan to members, advise Council on Division issues and are bound by Division Regulations.
The Colleges fulfill the learned society functions of Engineers Australia and are governed by College Boards.
Engineers Australia has four overseas Chapters in Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom, and new interest groups in the USA and the Middle East.
Some 30 multi-disciplinary Technical Societies and other related groups are affiliated with Engineers Australia to varying degrees and provide direct links with other professions with common interests.

Special interest groups are included under ‘Other Council Committees’.
